When you find the perfect swimsuit, you want it to last, right? You want to keep it from fading, snagging, or getting baggy as long as you can. Some of the most common questions people ask us are: What’s the best way to make your swimsuit last? How do you wash a swimsuit? Can you put a bathing suit in the washing machine? How do you get the chlorine out of your swimwear?
Like many things in life, all it takes is a little loving care to keep your swimsuit happy. With the right care, you will enjoy your suit for longer. And ultimately, you will save money in the process. So, toss your swimsuit a life preserver by following our swimwear care tips:
Try chlorine resistant swimwear
If you swim laps or take water aerobics classes on a regular basis, you will love the new chlorine resistant swimsuits. Made from special polyester/spandex materials, the suits are designed to maintain their color and elasticity up to 10 times longer than regular swimwear, even with repeated exposure to pool chemicals. You’ll find lots of styles in our chlorine resistant collection, just waiting for you to discover them.
After swimming, shower off at the pool
After your water workout, be sure to pop into the pool shower to rinse off. Just a quick rinse can help to remove some of the chlorine from your suit, skin, and hair before you even get home. You’ll notice a world of difference if you get into the habit of doing this.
Hand wash your swimsuit—every time!
It may be tempting to toss your swimwear into the washing machine, but washing machines are too harsh for a swimsuit. Whether you prefer one pieces, swimdresses, or tankinis, your swimwear will last longer if you hand wash it with a mild soap. Be sure to wash it every time you swim—as soon as possible after swimming. This will help remove the chlorine, sweat and sunscreen that can build up.
Roll it up and dry it flat
To dry your suit, gently squeeze out the water. Avoid wringing motions, which simply stretch out the fabric. Next, roll your swimsuit in a clean, dry towel and gently squeeze it some more. Finally, find a place to dry your suit flat. Hanging it to dry will only stretch it out. Avoid drying it in the sun, as the sun can cause fading too.
Alternate your suits
Did you ever stop and think: I don’t wear the same clothes every day, so why would I wear the same swimsuit every day? Why not treat yourself to at least two or three bathing suits per season? Not only does this give you some fashion choices, but it also allows each suit more drying time to get back to its original shape.
Avoid sitting on rough surfaces
The ledges of swimming pools are notorious for snagging swimsuits. If you love dangling your feet in the cool water on a warm sunny day, try sitting on a towel instead, or even grab a kickboard to use as a sit-upon. Your swimsuit bottomswill thank you! Beware of Velcro too—a Velcro closure on your swim bag can snag your suit if you’re not careful.
All it takes is a little extra care to keep your swimwear in terrific shape. The key is start out with a high-quality, chlorine resistant swimsuit and to be gentle every step of the way. With this approach, you will be sure to enjoy your perfect swimsuit for many swims to come!
