What is water aerobics?
A series of exercises performed in waist or chest-deep water that promotes physical fitness and muscle training using water resistance.
What are the advantages of working out in the water?
Water resistance creates ‘drag,’ encouraging you to work both sides of your muscles as you move your limbs back and forth through the water. Buoyancy also ensures that you don’t put too much pressure on your joints while moving around in the pool.
What should I wear for water aerobics?
For any workout – on land or in the water – it’s important to feel comfortable in a supportive garment that does not restrict your movement. Some great options include: racerback tankinis, high-neck one pieces, long torso swimwear and aquatards. When shopping for water aerobics swimwear, keep in mind that your swimsuit should provide with you the best and most secure fit so that the only thing you’ll have to focus on during your workout is making a splash!
Do I need any special equipment?
It’s totally up to you! Exercises can be performed with or without equipment. All you really need is waist or chest-deep water, a little bit of room and some high-quality chlorine resistant swimwear. The natural water resistance will help work your muscles on its own. For deep-water exercises, you can use a flotation belt, or noodle, to maintain the correct posture.
