New York, Paris and Milan may have their Fashion Weeks, but we couldn’t have been more excited to attend British Plus-Size Fashion weekend this past February 15-16. Created as an alternative to mainstream London Fashion Week (and its army of alarmingly slender models), this first-ever meet-up of international brands serving sizes 12-24 proved the need for stylish solutions to fill this gaping hole in the market.
First up was Press Day, when Swimsuits For All held a mini-fashion show, allowing us to introduce our line to magazine editors and bloggers from all over Europe.
The next day, we manned a booth and got to meet our customers face-to-face—a rare perk for an online company. Then we launched our new sexy swimwear line: a runway show in front of more than 200 people. It was the first time anyone had ever seen the line outside of our office, and it made a lasting impression. Our 12 gorgeous, curvy models sauntered down the runway in sleek, low ponytails, wearing Steve Madden wedges, oversized white sunglasses, and bold MAC lipsticks whose fun-yet-empowering names—Candy Yum Yum, Lady Danger, Impassioned and Girl About Town—spoke volumes.
The weekend was a major success for the entire plus-size fashion industry, and we were beyond excited to participate. Thanks to stars like Adele, Octavia Spencer, Gabourey Sidibe, Mindy Kaling and Queen Latifah, perceptions of what’s glamorous are changing. Of course, we’ve always known that sexy comes in all shapes and sizes.
