s4a: When do you feel sexy on the beach?
Gabi: I feel sexy on the beach when I have a great swimsuit, when the sun is shining, when I love my hair, when I’m with my friends. I think just when I’m comfortable and happy and I know that I look great. That’s when I feel the sexiest.
s4a: What makes you feel sexy in a swimsuit?
Gabi: I feel sexy in a swimsuit when the suit has bright colors. I love tan skin against, like bright neon’s. And when I have a good support system under my bust, you know, holding me in. Just something that is well-fitting and that makes me look great is when I feel the sexiest.
s4a: What’s your favorite curve on your body?
Gabi: My favorite curve on my body…I have a lot, but my favorite is probably my butt. And my hips.
s4a: Very nice. How do you feel about the word “plus size?”
Gabi: I think it’s funny that there’s so much controversy around the term “plus size.” I think it’s a fine descriptive term. I just think of it as a way to describe a body type. So, anyone who shops in a specific section of a store. I think that, ideally, stores would offer sizes 0, to you know, like, 32, but since they don’t, and we have to go to a specific section, I think of it as a way just to describe that section similar to, like, a petite section, you know? So I’m not offended by it. I think it’s a great way to describe my body type.
s4a: The average American woman is a size 14 but most models, especially in swimwear, are between a size 0 and a 4. What do you think that this says about how women are perceived?
Gabi: I think it’s sad that the representations of women in mainstream culture are usually so small. Just because we have such a diversity of sizes in the real world. I obviously think that all women are beautiful in sizes 0, 2, 4, those women are beautiful, too, but there definitely needs to be more representation of all sizes because what happens, is that I think so many women see those girls and they think they have to look like them or they should look like them. And, so, it leads to low self-esteem, and I know that plus size models and bloggers like myself are really helping change that. And, I think women, when they find my blog and they see other girls that look like them, it really helps them realize that they can look great at any size.
s4a: Is the male idea of sexy really a smaller woman or is that just what men are seeing everywhere?
Gabi: I think men, like everyone else, have different preferences. And so I do think they’re definitely influenced by what they see on TV and in the magazines just like women are. So, of course, some men are attracted to this model ideal but I think, overall, in my experience, I’m clearly not like a model’s body type and I have no problem, you know, getting dates and I have a boyfriend. So I think men are definitely attracted to different things. It’s just unfortunately, our society tells them what to be attracted to so a lot of people think they’re only attracted to one size but, in reality, I think men definitely have a variety of women and body types that they’re attracted to.
s4a: Where do you get your confidence?
Gabi: I think the reason I have so much confidence is finding the body acceptance movement online. It really helped show me that women my size could be happy and beautiful and stylish.
