Sadly, it’s nearing that fateful time of year again. The shows that we’ve adopted as our own children for the past 6-9 months will be going on hiatus. Goodbye, “Gossip Girl”… Laters to “The Biggest Loser”… Til next season, “90210”… How will my heart go on without you, “Hart of Dixie?” Guess there’s no better time to practice for “The Voice” than in the off-season.

Yes, the separation anxiety certainly does hurt. HOWEVER, no need to fear, there is a laundry list of programs that will satiate even the most salacious television appetites this summer.

Courtesy of our friends at Curvy Girl Guide, here is what you can expect during the summer of 2012. Be sure to check your local programming for any updates in dates and times.

1. Love the skin you’re in! First and foremost accept and embrace your beautiful curves. Your body is beautiful for its form as well as its function. Confidence is your sexiest asset, so stand up straight, be proud and SMILE!

2. Measure twice! Prior to swimsuit shopping, take your measurements. Each manufacturer’s sizing varies, so it’s crucial to refer to the size charts. If you’re unsure how to measure yourself, informative how-to-measure videos are available at Swimsuitsforall.com. SFA (How to Measure Guide) Armed with your measurements, consult the size charts. If the majority of your measurements are within 3/4” of one particular size, choose that size. If you are like most women and your measurements don’t fall exactly in line with the size charts, keep in mind that the torso measurement is the most important followed by the bust, then hips, then waist.

3. You’re putting me on! To know whether or not a suit fits, you have to have put it on properly. It’s a minor time investment that will surely pay off! When trying on a swimsuit, wear only your panties, no bra. If you’re trying a one piece, pretend you are putting on pantyhose and gather the swimsuit from the armhole, along the side seams to the outside leg opening of the suit. Keep it gathered as you put each leg in and pull it up, to your waist. Make sure the legline is giving you proper coverage. Now bend over forward from the waist and place your arms into the straps and let your breasts fall naturally into the bra cups. Slide the straps up over your shoulders and stand up straight.

If you’re trying on a tankini, put the bottom on first, as you would your panties. Make sure that it gives you the coverage you want. When trying on a tankini top, put it on by pulling it down over your head. Never step into it as it is not made to go over your hips. Bring the whole garment down to your waist as if it were a belt. Bend over forward from the waist and place your arms into the straps and let your breasts fall naturally into the bra. Slide the straps up over your shoulders, or if a halter, tie or clasp it behind your neck, and then finally stand up straight.

Once you’ve got it on properly, move around in it: bend over, sit, squat, heck even do jumping jacks! (It’s important not to get an “oops” surprise once you’re out in public) If the suit stays in place with little need for “fixing,” after you’ve given it a hardy wear test, then you’re good to go!

Tell me, have you ever had a public swimwear related “oops” surprise? I have! Thank goodness enough time has passed to laugh about it now! Who’s brave enough to share theirs??!?

Stay tuned for my next entry: What’s the right style for my figure?

Sure, we all have our own personal sense of style, which is not only completely normal but also highly encouraged in today’s seemingly uniform society. Incorporating aspects of individualism can help you stand out from an otherwise rather homogeneous crowd. However, according to ‘What Not To Wear’s’ Clinton Kelly, there is certainly a list of fashion errors that every woman should be conscious of when presenting herself in public.

Here is a look at several notable faux pas that can and should be avoided at all costs:

1. Shapeless Dresses: We can likely all admit, and even vividly picture those days where getting dressed seems like the least of our daily problems. With that said, these are the days that our appearance is often sacrificed because we don’t have the time or the interest in putting something polished together. However, according to Kelly, “this sad excuse for a dress ranks up there with the Mom Jean and white cross-trainers as one of the greatest style tragedies ever to befall the American woman.” His advice: it’s imperative to define a waist!

2. Frayed Hems: This is too common of an appearance on jeans. Why? Again, because we tend to throw on the same pair of “house jeans” when we’re running around trying to accommodate children, chores and ourselves. The good news is that it’s simple and affordable to go to a tailor to get your jeans hemmed, cleaned up and looking brand new! Per Kelly, “when I see a woman walking down the sidewalk with pants so long they’re all ripped up and dragging on the ground, I think, ‘she’s lazy’.” While how others perceive you certainly shouldn’t shape your entire world, it’s important to remember that our appearances do impact how others view us.

3. Shoes with Scuffs: Scuffed shoes are often regarded as another example of laziness. Polishing and buffing them takes only minutes out of your day and can transform the entire look of your outfit. Remember, shoes are generally a focal point and often set the tone for the entirety of what you’re wearing. Per Kelly, “the shoe always ALWAYS sets the tone for an outfit…think about that for a minute: It’s the reason nuns don’t wear stilettos and strippers don’t wear orthopedic heels.”

In a world where we often feel like we’ve lost control of certain things, your appearance is something that is completely and totally yours. Remember this every time you leave your house; make sure that you’re not only presentable, but comfortable and proud of what you’re wearing.

That being said, what are some fashion faux pas that you know you’re guilty of sporting? How do you plan on combating them?

Thankfully, we’re nearing that time of year again. You know what we’re talking about: summer! Time to enjoy the sunshine, cool breezes, good company and all of the fun associated with this lovely season. There’s just something about the peace of mind and relaxation associated with summer that make it that much more enjoyable than the rest of the year.

Picture this… you’re in your swimsuit (hopefully from us) lounging by the pool. You’ve somehow acquired that rare moment where you’re alone; okay, that’s unlikely on a holiday weekend. However, you’ve somehow whisked yourself away on a mental vacation to your own island oasis. All you need is a delicious and refreshing treat in your hand.

For those of you that live in year-round climates, you’re lucky! And to those of you that endure four seasons per year, we’re here to provide you with a refreshing recipe, courtesy of Curvy Girl Guide, that will make your Memorial Day weekend even more highly anticipated than usual.

Honeydew Mojitos:
A refreshing melon and rum cocktail for warm summer evenings.

Ingredients:

1/2 a fresh, ripe honeydew, cubed
6 oz white rum
2 oz mint simple syrup (see note)
2 limes, juiced
Club soda to taste
Ice

Instructions:

In a capable blender, spin the melon, rum, simple syrup and lime juice until frothy
Fill a glass with ice, and pour blended drink mix 2/3 up the glass
Add club soda to top off, stir, and garnish with mint and fresh melon
Lather, rinse, repeat, nap

Notes:

To prepare mint simple syrup, bring to a boil 1 C sugar and 1 C water with a big wad of chopped fresh mint. Stir. Remove from heat and strain into a mason jar. Keeps indefinitely in the fridge (but don’t push it past a couple of months).

Enjoy!

Top 4 Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

by Jean on May 11, 2012

After scouting out polls and doing some background research of our own, here are 4 Mother’s Day gift ideas that seemed to tickle many women’s fancies on this annual day of honoring. Let us know if you agree or if there are other tangible or intangible gifts that you prefer to either give to or receive from your loved ones.

1. Breakfast in Bed! While it may seem like a fairly common suggestion, I think that many of us enjoy flipping the situation on the kids by having a healthy morning meal prepared for us rather than by us.

2. A Clean House! Okay, okay – most of us will settle for the kitchen. After you prepare that breakfast, we sincerely enjoy not having to return to a sink full of dishes. Moreover, if you want to go the extra mile, make sure to actually clean out the sink and discard any food scraps AND to unload the dishwasher rather than leaving us an extra surprise!

3. Quality Family Time! Life these days, to put it quite simply, can be extremely hectic for even the most organized families. Sometimes, we lack the familial balance that we seek and on this day request that the family gathers for table talk, a movie or a board game. We take pleasure in slowing down the pace of life and want to enjoy your company more than anything.

4. An Emotional Keepsake! While we’re sure that there aren’t many women that wouldn’t accept the opportunity to be pampered at a spa or by a fancy dinner or night out, it’s the personal mementos that mean the most. Frame a picture of the family or of a family vacation spot that holds a special place in your heart. We also enjoy poems, heartfelt cards and anything that is coming directly from you!

So, what do you say to all of the mothers out there? Do these items or gestures top your list? If not, what is that you actually appreciate the most on your special day?

As April was ‘Stress Awareness Month’, there’s no better time to start preparing your mind and body for summertime relaxation. Sure, regulated stress can be beneficial as it can be a motivator and stimulate adrenaline, but in this day and age, we tend to put too much of it on ourselves.

We’re all constantly bogged down by daily routines and the stress that comes along with them. From work to preparing healthy meals to fitting in your exercise routine, managing your day to day life can become overwhelming. However, it’s important to allow your body to stop and smell the roses, to free your mind from its mental prison, and to jump on the relaxation train.

So, what can you do to relax and reap the health benefits that rest brings? Don’t worry; this doesn’t mean you’re going to be termed unproductive and lazy, or that you have to feel guilty for taking some time for yourself. Simply read a book, go for a long walk, take a yoga class or take a nap on the beach. Do whatever allows your mind and body to slow down and exist in the present.

Since we’re a results-driven society, what kind can you expect from your necessary relaxation? Here are a few benefits:

1. It protects your heart. You only have one, so why take any risks!
2. It boosts your memory; brain power is what fuels success!
3. It reduces the chance of depression; allow yourself to find time for enjoyment and happiness.
4. It lowers your risk of catching a cold; every minute counts, so give yourself breaks in order to forge on with your busy life!

These, of course, are just a handful of the many benefits that relaxation can bring to your life. How do you relax and do you have any stress relief tips that you can share with the rest of us?
